OpenAI finds hidden recording device in office; employee arrested after FBI referral
jaredwiener · hn · 2026-10-14
OpenAI says it discovered a sophisticated hidden recording device in one of its offices. Using its own models to analyze the device, the company identified a specific employee who had planted it days earlier. The matter was referred to the FBI, which made an arrest; the investigation is ongoing.
OpenAI states there is no indication the individual accessed or exfiltrated model weights, source code, or customer data, and the employee was terminated. The company frames the case as an example of AI helping counter sophisticated security threats, from insider risks to nation-state actors.
