Fridge firmware backdoor exploited: cryptographers debate AI's role in mass IoT attacks
zeynep · x · 2026-10-14
Cryptographer Matthew Green and Zeynep Tufekci debated the recent wave of smart-appliance hacks. Tufekci notes the exploited CVEs date to 2023 and were long patched — victims simply never updated. The fridge firmware hid a "secret" auth bypass, likely for vendor support, generating a password from the current date via an algorithm embedded in the firmware, enabling remote code execution — "Spectre this was not." Green adds that "not AI" is no longer a thing: while these weren't novel AI-generated 0days, the tooling and coordination were likely model-assisted and mass-launched.
