Cryptographer Matthew Green: AI will scale cyberattack damage 15,000x and a deadly catastrophe is coming

In a debate with Zeynep Tufekci over the French supermarket fridge hack, cryptographer Matthew Green warned that AI is about to make cyberattacks catastrophically worse.
- Even patched networks are full of vulnerabilities; with unknown CVEs, an abliterated model plus Ghidra could likely find them in three hours by decompiling
- The fridge-attack victims clearly weren't running AI defense — and AI can scale that damage 15,000x
- He sees no path to AI defense covering every device, company, and network "short of a real catastrophe, with loss of human life. And that catastrophe is coming."
Tufekci had argued for a defensive push: patching, defensive scanning sweeps, and using models to port legacy code to memory-safe languages.
