Gemini 4 agent team finds new fusion MHD equilibria within hours, overturning a 59-year assumption

A Google DeepMind paper with the University of Maryland and UC San Diego (arXiv:2610.07304) applies AI to a classic fusion physics problem:
- In 1967, physicist Harold Grad conjectured the magnetic fields inside twisty fusion reactors could never be solved exactly — believed for 59 years
- Two recent papers overturned that; one used OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra
- DeepMind then gave that paper to a team of Gemini 4 agents in Google Antigravity: given Landreman's result and a list of open questions, the agents proposed generalized solutions removing the stellarator-symmetry assumption
- The paper states "promising candidates appeared within hours", and scientists verified every step by hand
From 59 years unsolved to candidate solutions in hours — one of the most striking AI-for-Science results yet.
