Fields Medalist Duminil-Copin 'paralysed' as OpenAI model claims proofs for all his career's open problems

Fields Medalist Hugo Duminil-Copin (IHES/University of Geneva) published a stunned reaction: OpenAI's new model — which didn't exist before late August, thinking 3 hours per problem across 4,000 problems — touched every major open problem he has publicly mentioned in his career, with dozens of papers colliding with his own work and even thousand-page proofs. "The shock is immense. I am paralysed," he wrote, saying mathematicians must rethink their profession. The poster adds that OpenAI employees' unease may stem from models nearing the recursive self-improvement loop, with novel self-improvement as the last piece.
