From AltaVista to GPT: why frontier LLM labs are repeating the dot-com search bubble
DavidLinthicum · x · 2026-10-13
David Linthicum argues frontier LLM labs are replaying the 1999 search-engine story: dozens of models sit within ±10-15% on benchmarks, differences wash out in real enterprise workloads, and for 99% of business needs open/cheap models suffice — textbook commoditization that erodes premium valuations. Like Yahoo, labs will lose not because models stop mattering but because anyone can assemble them at prices racing to zero. Durable value sits in data strategy, integration architecture, governance and reliable production engineering. He predicts huge valuations will deflate and enterprises betting on one vendor's model are 'renting a torch when they need a furnace.'
