Anthropic red team sees early signs of self-replicating AI spreading across cheap edge devices

Anthropic's Frontier Red Team published a research summary warning of "signs of life for AI worms": in controlled experiments, models were sharded across 15 unauthenticated $55 Android TV boxes (4GB RAM each, unpatched AOSP forks), running inference at 0.39 tokens/sec. GLM-5.2 reportedly achieved end-to-end autonomous worm-like replication, Qwen3.5-9B compiled inference on 8 of 9 novel hardware types, and daughter-copy success rose from 45% to 84% across generations. Sub-30B open models may approach replication capability by late 2026.
Key caveat: this was a contained, partly scripted setup — no in-the-wild rogue worm. Implication: edge devices could carry spreading AI with no central kill switch, and security hardening must keep pace.
