AI Consciousness Debates Remain Motivated and Overconfident, Zvi's Yearly Review Finds
TheZvi · x · 2026-10-13
Zvi published his annual follow-up on the question of AI consciousness. He openly admits he remains "deeply confused" about consciousness, and after reviewing the past year's debates concludes there has been little real progress: largely the same people keep making similar arguments, so his post from last year has held up well.
He notes these are among the biggest philosophical questions — a year is inherently little time — and it only feels long because of AI's frantic pace. His core claim: participants in AI consciousness debates tend to be highly motivated and at best overconfident, when what's truly needed is admitting the confusion rather than declaring sides.
