Karpathy re-shares his LLM capability funnel: 6 billion people barely touch AI
kknd1991 · reddit · 2026-10-13
Andrej Karpathy re-shared his April tweet on the LLM capability funnel, arguing the gap in shared understanding is widening into a sharp funnel:
- 6B people (75%) have barely come into contact with LLMs
- 1-2B casual users (20%) use free-tier ChatGPT occasionally, like better Google search
- 20M professional power users (0.2%) use frontier LLMs in math & code, completing weeks-long projects via agents in hours
- 5,000 frontier insiders (0.00006%) run swarms of agents for weeks, mining new science and advancing mathematics
He cites three causes: impact scales with ambition, the jagged frontier, and access tiers.
