Lipwise: open-source local dictation with on-device LLM cleanup in one turn
lnenad · reddit · 2026-10-13
Lipwise is an open-source cross-platform dictation app: hold a hotkey, speak, and the transcript is run through a local LLM before output — fixing self-corrections, adding punctuation, formatting lists, and honoring commands like "make it shorter". You can also select text anywhere and say what to do with it ("reply yes but not before Monday", "translate to German").
- Fully local speech recognition via transcribe.cpp (ggml), 69 models including Parakeet, Whisper, Canary, Moonshine (author uses Parakeet 0.6B); the LLM step runs locally via llama.cpp + Qwen3.5 4B/9B with one-click setup, or points at Claude/OpenAI/Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint
- Rust + Tauri, 5MB installer; falls back to raw transcript if the LLM is slow; clipboard-based input with restoration; optional wake word for command mode
- MIT licensed, no account, no telemetry; known rough edges: unsigned installer SmartScreen warning on Windows, compositor-dependent shortcuts on Linux
