Veteran Unix admin: LLMs cured my decades-long dread of system administration
esrtweet · x · 2026-10-13
A programmer who has reluctantly done Unix sysadmin work for decades writes that he always hated the job because it's unsolvable by principled reasoning — it's memorized "magic details" all the way down, and troubleshooting procedures are never documented while tools keep changing.
LLMs, he found, are extremely good at remembering those magic details and generating diagnostics that discriminate among failure modes. He no longer curses and yells at sysadmin problems — he just converses with a robot that remembers everything for him. "This is a good thing."
