Fields medallist says he cried after OpenAI dropped 700+ AI-generated math papers
LucaAmb · x · 2026-10-13
Via @miniapeur and @curiouswavefn: Fields medallist Hugo Duminil-Copin was deeply shaken by OpenAI's release of more than 700 AI-generated mathematical manuscripts, 16 of which touch directly on his own research area.
"On Tuesday night, I cried, and it woke up my daughter," he said, adding "They have annihilated my field of research."
Reposter @curiouswavefn argues the ground has shifted so much that people will react in many ways, and that dismissing reactions from the world's leading mathematicians doesn't help — most of us have never experienced having our life's work erased or solved overnight.
