ByteDance Seed spins up dedicated model alignment and preparedness department
terryyuezhuo · x · 2026-10-13
ByteDance's Seed lab has announced (via internal email, reported by The Paper) a standalone "Model-Alignment & Preparedness" department led by Yan Lin, reporting to Seed head Wu Yonghui, absorbing the Responsible AI team and part of the Chat team. It's reportedly the first Chinese frontier AI lab to make safety and alignment a standalone department.
The team will work on model specifications, safety evaluation, alignment training, safeguard systems, and risk monitoring — with a focus on agent safety and mitigating frontier CBRN risks, one of the first Chinese companies to say so publicly. The change elevates an existing alignment team rather than starting fresh; internally, Seed views alignment as a core capability for scaling model deployment, and plans public collaboration with external researchers and third-party evaluations.
