Envision lands third Fortune 'Change the World' spot with Gobi green-powered 5GW AI compute plan

Envision Group made Fortune's 2026 'Change the World' list for the third time, thanks to its Mission Gobi plan and the Ulanqab Xinghe base—home to the world's largest single AI compute facility—signaling that the AI race now extends from chips and models to energy infrastructure.
Three approaches: Alphabet buys green power via long-term PPAs; Anthropic locks in GW-scale compute through infrastructure partners; Envision co-designs generation, storage, grid and compute as one system. Grid constraints are a real bottleneck—new substations take 12-18 months versus 6-month data center delivery.
Execution: Envision plans 5GW of green AI data centers in desert regions by 2030. The 120,000-square-meter Ulanqab base is expandable to a million-card cluster, runs on 80%+ direct-connected renewables, uses its Tianji/Tianshu models to close the loop on forecasting and dispatch, and an SST+BESS 800V DC power chain—yielding 10x compute density per unit area. Chairman Lei Zhang's goal: make tokens 'as cheap as potatoes'.
