Norway fines Microsoft's Xandr $9.6M over Grindr ad data sharing
TechNadu · x · 2026-10-13
Norway's Data Protection Authority has issued its largest-ever privacy fine — 92 million NOK ($9.6M) — against Microsoft-owned adtech firm Xandr.
- Between 2018 and 2020, Xandr's real-time bidding auctions exposed Grindr users' IP addresses, device IDs, and inferred sexual orientation to thousands of advertisers without valid explicit consent.
- The ruling establishes that ad intermediaries cannot outsource legal compliance to publishers.
- Microsoft says the conduct predates its acquisition and is reviewing the decision; Xandr has three weeks to appeal.
