Disney originals flopped for 10 years, yet Zootopia 2's $1.86B leads into new bet Hexed

Aakashgupta breaks down Disney's originals-vs-sequels ledger: no brand-new animated original has hit since Moana (2016) — Strange World grossed $73M worldwide against $200M in losses, Wish did $255M on a $200M budget, and even Encanto needed Disney+ and a viral song. Meanwhile sequels print money: Moana 2 cleared $1B, Zootopia 2 hit $1.86B as the biggest Hollywood animated film ever, and Disney's last two originals combined grossed less than Zootopia 2's first five days.
Yet Disney greenlit a new original, Hexed (Nov 25), with heavy insurance: directors from Zootopia/Moana 2 and a Hexed character sneaked into Zootopia 2's end credits to funnel the biggest animated opening in history toward the new film.
