LLM cache verifier drift: reject-only calibration tripled error rate; 5% audits fix it
Reasonable_Royal_621 · reddit · 2026-10-13
A production postmortem on CacheVerifier, an LLM semantic cache verifier: in prod you only get labels on cache rejects, so recalibrating the threshold on rejects alone caused a ratchet effect—error rate blew from a 2% target to 9.5–27.7% while hit rate paradoxically rose from 28.8% to 58.9%. Every labeled point sits below the threshold, so everything above looks error-free and the threshold keeps loosening. The boring fix: randomly audit 5% of approved hits (force a miss, weight by 1/p), bringing error back to 1.3–1.6% with under 0.5% extra LLM calls, validated via replay sims on public benchmarks. Repo included (Paper B, section 4.4).
