According to court filings quoted in the thread, Character.AI has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, with Disney submitting a $20M opening bid.
Key details:
- Disney is not buying the company itself, only an IP license plus claims
- Disney is also providing "transition services" using former C.AI employees it poached ahead of the filing
- Per the court filing: "if such a bid is unavailable, however, the platform will be wound down"
If the deal goes through, the once highly valued AI companion startup will end in a near-liquidation sale.
