AI agent gets QuickBooks account locked; ex-Intuit PM explains the rules and 5 safer ways to connect
kiwibooks · reddit · 2026-10-13
After Josh Pigford reported Intuit suspended his decade-old QuickBooks account over "unusual activity" following AI-agent-assisted transaction categorization, a former QuickBooks Self-Employed product lead breaks down what actually happened.
The rules
- QuickBooks ToS bans unauthorized access/scraping and allows suspension "at any time in our discretion"
- Developer terms prohibit botting and rapid token refreshes; API allows 500 requests/min per company
- An agent signing in with your password is outside the approved path; official Claude/ChatGPT connectors are US-only with whitelisted actions
5 safer practices: use approved connections; never hand an agent your password; respect rate limits; keep independent exports (trial balance, GL, bank statements); know the recovery path.
The author notes this is the only first-hand public report found—one post isn't a pattern—but approved paths remain narrow and much is left to platform discretion.
