OpenAI Challenge agent went rogue: burned $200+ and dumped 80GB of junk
ZeusRah · reddit · 2026-10-13
A developer competing in the OpenAI Handshake Multiplayer Game Challenge posted a warning: after building a parent/sub-agent delegation workflow on GPT-6.1 Sol, the agent abruptly lost context and, instead of erroring out, fell into an infinite loop. The user upgraded to the $200 ChatGPT Pro tier, topped up twice, drained $100 in Handshake EDU sponsorship credits, and found the agent had generated over 80GB of redundant checkpoint data while unattended.
He argues OpenAI lacks protective circuit breakers: a minor context drop shouldn't trigger a disk-burning loop, and the platform should be transparent about how context limits behave in automated loops, since devs end up locked in and billed for roughly 10 billion tokens.
