NVIDIA ships a NURBS B-rep kernel on USD, but devs slam its nondeterministic geometry
rms80 · x · 2026-10-13
- NVIDIA just released a NURBS B-rep geometry kernel built on USD with C++ and Python support — a notable move for 3D/CAD tooling.
- Early adopters, however, call the library mediocre: internally inconsistent booleans, loose unprincipled tolerances (comments admit they were bumped up experimentally until things mostly stopped breaking), and nondeterministic geometric operations — some from random sampling seeded by wallclock time, others from memory-layout-dependent order of operations affecting results.
- Punchline: "your model may be manifold on Monday but not on Tuesday."
