RustGIS v0.2.0 adds DuckDB SQL and an MCP server so AI agents can drive open-source GIS
giswqs · x · 2026-10-13
RustGIS v0.2.0 is out: a fast, free, pure-Rust GIS running natively on Windows/macOS/Linux and in the browser, with data staying local by default.
- New formats open in place: GeoPackage, GeoParquet, FlatGeobuf (large files stream view-by-view), KML/KMZ with styles, GPX, zipped Shapefiles, PMTiles, richer GeoTIFF support—all working in the web app too
- Export to GeoPackage, GeoParquet, Shapefile, KMZ and more
- SQL queries run through DuckDB, with GDAL-backed format support
- Ships an MCP server so AI agents can make maps, plus a built-in AI assistant panel (e.g. Claude Opus 5.5) for tasks like zooming, labeling cities, and buffer analysis
