Indie dev builds CRED in a weekend: 8,413 free Canadian economic series, 3x FRED
RichardsonDx · x · 2026-10-13
An independent developer noticed FRED's 850,000 economic series include only 2,819 covering Canada — mostly stale OECD copies with no provincial data and no live policy rate — and spent a weekend building CRED to close the gap.
- Scale: 8,413 Canadian economic series, 3x FRED's Canadian holdings, sourced live from Statistics Canada and the Bank of Canada.
- Coverage: employment (including breakdowns by age, industry, and hours), housing starts back to 1955, GDP compensation back to 1961, CPI, trade, national accounts, and more.
- Usability: no account, no paywall, free API + MCP, FRED-grade charting (YoY transforms, recession shading, zoom, shareable charts), and full-text search across all series. Every series was verified against live StatCan data before shipping.
