Anthropic cuts distilled data harvesting by 90–99%; David Sacks says no regulation needed

Anthropic's blog (Oct 12) says new defenses have reduced data harvested via distillation attacks on Claude by roughly 90–99%. AI czar David Sacks congratulates them and revisits his earlier argument that Anthropic — not government — was best positioned to stop distillation. He recounts the earlier Washington push to restrict open models on IP grounds, the 50-company open letter (Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, IBM, Palantir, Dell), Jensen Huang's first-ever X post, and letters from 200 startups. His take: restricting open models would have removed the incentive for closed-model companies to fix the problem themselves. The administration didn't impose restrictions, Anthropic invested in defenses, and they worked — "not every technical challenge is a reason to run to Washington."
