RustGIS v0.2.0 ships MCP server so AI agents can build maps
giswqs · x · 2026-10-13
RustGIS, a fast, free, open-source GIS written in pure Rust, released v0.2.0 with a local-first design: data stays on your machine unless you explicitly send it to an AI model, and every action is a scriptable command. It runs natively on Windows, macOS and Linux, plus in the browser.
Highlights:
- Far more formats: GeoPackage, GeoParquet, FlatGeobuf, KML/KMZ, GPX, zipped Shapefiles and PMTiles open natively; large files stream a view at a time, all working in the web app too
- Export anywhere: save layers as GeoPackage, GeoParquet, Shapefile or KMZ
- SQL via DuckDB: run SQL queries and open DuckDB databases through DuckDB Spatial, plus reading File Geodatabase, DXF and more
- MCP server: new MCP server lets AI agents create maps
