Quintin Pope: pretraining is a degenerate special case of RL, subsumed by RL with right data
QuintinPope5 · x · 2026-10-13
Researcher Quintin Pope argues pretraining can be viewed as a degenerate RL special case: offline, with fixed equal imitation strength per trajectory. He claims such methods inherit most of RLVR's problems even without an explicit reward function, since a reward's leverage comes from shaping the future distribution of online training data — which SIVC also does. Thus "RL with appropriate data" subsumes every data-based method of instilling behaviors.
