Claude Code desktop lacks click-free session handoff for token-cost control
markhazlewood42 · ghdev · 2026-10-10
A claude-code issue proposes exposing a startsession tool so a desktop Code session can hand off to a fresh session automatically — the main way to control token cost on long tasks, since every tool call resends the whole conversation.
- Terminal users can script this; the desktop app can't: spawntask creates a chip requiring a click, and no startsession/handofftosession tool exists despite other session tools referencing them.
- Workaround: runscheduledtask + setsessionmodel + setsessioneffort + sendmessage needs no click, but creates a Routines-only session that can't be moved, grouped, pinned, or detached, and needs two persistent routines to chain hops.
- Requested API: prompt, model, effort, cwd/worktree, permissionmode inputs, creating a normal top-level session; higher model/effort asks the user first.
- Verified that model/effort settings apply from the next turn, so they should be set before the new session's first turn.
