Google's EmbeddingGemma 2: 740M on-device model for cross-modal vector search
TheTuringPost · x · 2026-10-13
- Google released EmbeddingGemma 2, a 740M-parameter embedding model enabling on-device cross-modal search: find videos by spoken description, audio by question, images by sketch
- Matryoshka representation learning means the first N dimensions of a 768-dim embedding work standalone — keep 256 dims, normalize, and search with 1/3 the storage
- Storage math: 1M vectors at 768 dims ≈ 3.07GB vs 0.51GB at 128 dims (6× savings); Google says 128 dims suits text-only workloads best
- Caveat: shorter vectors can lose distinctions, so verify retrieval quality on your data
