Open-source Android app runs Codex CLI on your phone via proot, no root needed

A Redditor released buddy-android, an open-source (Apache 2.0) Android app that runs the real Codex CLI inside a small Alpine Linux system under proot (no root), signed in with your ChatGPT plan and no API key. Phone capabilities are exposed as tools—read screen, tap, type, scroll, open apps—so Codex works through apps like a person.
The author uses it to turn on lights, order food (modifying orders mid-run), and reply to messages, with ChatGPT voice for dictation and read-aloud replies. Anything that sends, posts, or buys requires an approval card (Approve/Deny/Change). It also works with Claude Code and OpenCode.
