a16z: Only 7 AI products rank in top 50 for web, mobile and revenue
omooretweets · x · 2026-10-13
a16z partner omooretweets analyzed consumer AI rankings and found only 7 products appear in all three global top-50 lists (web traffic, mobile traffic, monthly revenue) — just 14% overlap between each list.
The seven fall into three patterns:
- General assistants: ChatGPT (#1 across all three), Claude (#2 spending but #12 mobile), Perplexity (#9 spending, well above its traffic rank, now monetizing power users via agentic products like Computer).
- Creative tools: Suno (#7 spending, #47 mobile) built proprietary models in music, an area labs avoided due to legal complexity; Photoroom serves prosumers making marketing/e-commerce content with easy, accessible tools.
- Incumbents: Canva (#3-4 across the board) and Notion (#17 spending) leveraged existing distribution to reinvent themselves as AI creation and workspace products.
He expects more entrants as categories open up, likely requiring ad- or transaction-monetized "free" products — all seven current ones are subscription-heavy/freemium.
