UT San Antonio's College of Education and Human Development is launching an Applied AI in Language Education graduate certificate for fall 2026: a 15-credit, five-course online program for K-12 and higher-ed teachers, aspiring language teachers, and CS/engineering students. Built by professors Martha Sidury Christiansen and Kevin Hirschi, it teaches educators to understand how AI works, question when it helps, critically evaluate outputs, and consider how AI shapes language and learning—one course covers applied AI literacy and NLP, including how LLMs process words differently from humans. The author also shares a practical tip: before asking a model to generate practice items or feedback, write what a strong student answer looks like in your own words, then test the model against that checklist.
