Anthropic red team: small AI models may self-replicate on IoT devices within months
kimmonismus · x · 2026-10-13
Anthropic's Frontier Red Team reports that small AI models may be months away from being capable enough to self-replicate on commercial IoT devices like smart ovens and off-brand Android TV boxes. Such a replicator would be hard to shut down since there's no centralized kill switch, though it may run slowly.
An accompanying chart shows open-weight models under 30B parameters steadily climbing the Epoch Capabilities Index; on current trends they reach the self-replication capability floor (set by GLM-5.2) by late 2026 — only 2.4 ECI to go. The authors flag this as a growing containment risk.
