Anthropic's Frontier Red Team says small AI models may self-replicate within months

Anthropic's Frontier Red Team (Will Zhou, Logan Graham) warns that the capabilities making models strong coding agents also generalize to cyber tasks including autonomous replication. They see 'signs of life for AI worms': agents can already complete individual replication-chain steps and pass adaptations to future copies, and small models may soon self-replicate without datacenter access. They advocate hardening systems against spread while preparing for a world where replicators persist — a risk they call underpriced.
