Fork-and-Flush: helping AI agents escape 'idea basins' in auto-research
burny_tech · x · 2026-10-13
Dimitris Papail frames auto-research as "Idea Descent": an agent's metric decreases as it explores ideas, but agents often tunnel into one class of ideas and keep polishing it — an "idea basin," analogous to gradient descent stuck in a local minimum.
The proposed fix is Fork-and-Flush: fork multiple agents to explore in parallel, then periodically flush underperforming branches to escape the basin.
A neat visualization trick from the thread: have an LLM rewrite each experiment as a spec, answer thousands of binary "is A closer to B or C" queries, then embed the resulting N×N matrix in 2D — runs visibly saturate into small regions. The author confirms they hadn't tried a simple spec cosine-similarity baseline.
