Anthropic warns that small AI models may be only months away from being capable enough to self-replicate on commercial IoT devices. In its evals, a 9B model got inference running on 8 of 9 hardware types tested.
An accompanying chart fits the capability trend of open-weight models ≤30B by release date, projecting that small-model capability crosses the self-replication floor (GLM-5.2 level, ECI ≈151.8) around late Q3 2026.
