Study finds VLMs bind spatial relations via a dual mechanism: vision encoder primary, LM secondary
davidbau · x · 2026-10-13
New research traces where spatial variable binding happens inside VLMs. Finding: a dual mechanism — the vision encoder is the primary source of pointer-like binding, with the LM backbone secondary. Remove one pathway and the other compensates, meaning models reason spatially both geometrically and verbally.
