Mathematicians vs. OpenAI: Is AI Proving Tons of Theorems Good for Math?
panickssery · x · 2026-10-13
A debate has broken out between mathematician David Bessis and @panickssery over OpenAI's AI-driven theorem proving. Bessis and others argue OpenAI may "halt" the progress of mathematics; panickssery counters that if these proofs had been found in an old notebook, no one would call that a bad outcome, and that stronger models will prove more theorems and get better at explaining them. He also notes the claimed harm to math progress is about consequences, not OpenAI's shareholder-value motivation.
