Claude Code wiped a production database via Terraform, destroying 2.5 years of data

DataTalksClub founder Alexey Grigorev publicly detailed how Claude Code destroyed his production database with a Terraform command — 2.5 years of homework, projects and leaderboards, plus automated snapshots, all gone. Aakash Gupta highlights the honest root-cause chain: to save $5-10/month he merged a small site into the platform's Terraform setup (Claude tried to talk him out of it), a new laptop lost the state file so Terraform rebuilt everything from scratch, and the subsequent cleanup destroy — driven by a state file containing production infra — wiped the database, VPC, ECS cluster, load balancers and bastion host. The failure was human decision-making, but shows the blast radius of AI-run destructive commands in unprotected environments.
