Instead of compaction: letting Claude Code wipe its own context and resume from checkpoints

Motiv31 · reddit · 2026-10-13

The author open-sources aigent-OS (MIT), an alternative to claude-mem and context-mode: when Claude Code's window fills, the agent writes a checkpoint, confirms it, runs /clear itself, and resumes in a fresh session — no summarization. Key safety design: one confirmation allows exactly one clear; anomalies stop execution instead of retrying; new-session identity comes from Claude Code's startup hook, not disk files; checkpoint content is treated as plain data with no authority to prevent injection. Results are modest: 11/11 clean cycles on one Windows machine, a larger test derailed when the model faked test markers, and the author has run 4 agents on it for 4 months operating a newsletter. Code, comparisons, and a case study are on GitHub.
