Nat Lambert: announcing benchmarks without shipping almost guarantees being beaten
natolambert · x · 2026-10-13
Hugging Face researcher Nathan Lambert observes an industry pattern: if you announce a model's benchmarks without releasing anything (weights, product, API, etc "later"), it's almost a sure thing that someone ships a better model in your category before you get yours out.
Benchmark-first marketing, he implies, is a snapshot that decays fast — the longer the shipping window, the higher the odds of being leapfrogged.
