Musk: China's manufacturing scale beats rest of world combined, but HBM will be harder
elonmusk · x · 2026-10-13
Elon Musk argues that once China masters manufacturing a product, its ability to scale often exceeds the rest of the world combined, citing lithium batteries and solar as examples.
SpaceX is a rare counter-example, with mass to orbit roughly an order of magnitude above everyone else, but China now accounts for the majority of non-SpaceX mass to orbit. On RAM, Musk notes it was a low-margin commodity only 3 years ago and LP5/LP6 follow common standards China is solving fast — but newer HBM architectures, SRAM layers under logic, and 3D-stacked RAM on logic with cooling will be much harder.
