NVIDIA's NURBS-based CAD kernel SMLIB goes open source, with MCP agent support
burhop · x · 2026-10-13
Big CAD news: SMLIB, NVIDIA's NURBS-based geometric kernel, is finally open source. ClassCAD, which has worked with the SMLIB dev team for over 20 years, says the kernel powers its entire product line — headless CAD runtime, GUI, AI/MCP integration, and PDM. ClassCAD runs cross-platform in C++, serves apps over WebSockets/HTTP or embeds via WASM, and supports agentic workflows: an agent reads llms.txt, installs the ClassCAD MCP server, then conversationally models parts (sketch, revolve a flanged bushing, verify volume, export to OFB/STEP/STL/GLB). Commenters note NVIDIA's close ties with Siemens and wonder about industry fallout.
