OpenCode 2.0 overhauls the open-source AI coding agent into a platform
mark_k · x · 2026-10-13
OpenCode 2.0 ships with a major architectural overhaul of the open-source AI coding agent:
- Single background service shared by terminal, desktop, and web interfaces — the biggest change
- Code Mode: agents write JavaScript to combine MCP tools and APIs, cutting tool-call overhead and context bloat
- Background agents: run subagents and shell commands asynchronously
- Redesigned API for session management and orchestration
- Plugins: 80+ internal plugins, TUI extensions, hot reloading; OpenCode can write and load its own plugins
- New SDK for building custom coding agents and interfaces
It's evolving from an interactive coding assistant into a fully programmable development platform.
