Mistral launches Large 4: 1T-parameter open-weight multimodal model, 52B active
pstAsiatech · x · 2026-10-12
Mistral released a public preview of Mistral Large 4 (ML4, unofficially "le Chonk"), its largest and most capable model:
- Natively multimodal with 1 trillion total parameters and 52 billion active
- Strong across coding, agentic workflows and multimodal understanding; state-of-the-art among open models on enterprise workloads (cybersecurity, finance, law), significantly outperforming other US/European open-weight models
- Surpasses even frontier closed models in some areas like visual grounding
- Weights drop end of month; trained on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in Mistral's European datacenters
- Red-teaming with cybersecurity leaders and state authorities before release
