U-Space: label-free, single-pass uncertainty estimation for reasoning LLMs beats multi-pass baselines
AdRevolutionary3242 · reddit · 2026-10-12
Researchers released U-Space/U-Lens, a training-free, label-free method that estimates LLM answer confidence in a single forward pass. Score = (projection of the hidden state onto four "doubt" directions) × (mean entropy over reasoning tokens).
Key points
- No correctness labels, no fine-tuning, no resampling or judge model
- Interpretable: distinguishes ambiguity, missing information, conflicting evidence, and general uncertainty
- Best estimator in 3-seed, 3-model (Gemma 4, Qwen3.5, Magistral), 4-benchmark evals — ahead of 5-pass, 10-pass, and supervised baselines
- Only model-specific piece is a Jacobian lens (from Anthropic's global workspace paper); 40+ pre-fitted lenses on Hugging Face, or fit your own with 100 unlabeled prompts using Anthropic's reference code
Suggested applications: route low-confidence answers to bigger models or humans, trigger retrieval on missing info, ask clarifying questions on ambiguity, flag conflicting evidence in RAG. Paper: arXiv 2610.09087; code on GitHub.
