Fork-and-Flush: Fork Your Agent Into Copies With Empty Context to Escape Idea Basins
DimitrisPapail · x · 2026-10-12
Researcher DimitrisPapail proposes Fork-and-Flush to fix the tunnel vision agents develop in AutoResearch.
He frames AutoResearch as "Idea Descent": a metric of interest goes down as a function of ideas/experiments, with agents pulled toward one idea or another — but they often lock onto a single type of idea, like gradient descent stuck in a local minimum.
Fork-and-Flush is simple: every so often, fork the agent into T copies in the same workspace but empty the context, let them run for a while, then continue from the best one. In the gradient-descent analogy, it's essentially basin hopping.
The author also describes a playful way to plot "idea basins": an LLM rewrites every experiment as a spec and answers a few thousand binary queries — "is Experiment A closer to B or to C?" — mapping experiments into a comparable space.
