Microsoft's Fork-and-Flush helps agents escape "idea basins," improving results 66%

Microsoft Research's Fork-and-Flush targets "idea basins" — research agents stuck tunnel-visioning on one type of idea, like GD in a local minimum. Periodically fork the agent into T copies sharing the workspace but with flushed chat context, run each briefly, continue from the best. Across 13 long-horizon tasks (runs lasting days), it beat single-run and best-of-N by relative improvements of 66.0% and 44.4% at equal compute. They even visualize idea basins by having an LLM rewrite experiments as specs and answer thousands of pairwise binary similarity queries.
