LEAN proofs can be 'correct but alien' or exploit kernel bugs, researcher warns
gklambauer · x · 2026-10-12
The second half of gklambauer's thread on AI-generated LEAN proofs adds two more failure modes:
- Correct but alien: the proof verifies yet is incomprehensible, with no useful explanation of why the result holds.
- Kernel bug exploit: a proof that passes checking but is simply wrong because it exploits a LEAN kernel bug — which has happened before. He notes there is no formal proof that LEAN itself is correctly implemented.
Combined with part one (formalizing the wrong problem, which OpenAI didn't check, and proofs unrelated to their papers), this gives four distinct ways AI formal proofs can mislead.
