Four ways AI-generated LEAN proofs can go wrong, from formalization drift to kernel bugs
gklambauer · x · 2026-10-12
Researcher gklambauer outlines four failure modes for AI-assisted LEAN formal proofs:
- Wrong problem formalized: the proof formalizes a different problem than claimed — easy for an expert to catch, but OpenAI didn't bother checking.
- Valid proof, irrelevant paper: the LEAN proof is fine but has no connection to the natural-language paper describing it.
In a follow-up he adds two more: a correct but alien, incomprehensible proof with no useful explanation; and a proof that exploits a LEAN kernel bug and is simply wrong — which has happened before, and there is no formal proof that LEAN itself is correctly implemented.
