Microsoft's Scott Guthrie on Maia 300 AI chip, insatiable AI demand, and the model price war

Microsoft will scale its Azure Maia AI chip program to multi-gigawatt deployments starting next year, with the next-gen Maia 300 chip entering production deployments in 2027 — claiming 40% more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU-based competitors.
In an interview, Cloud & AI EVP Scott Guthrie discussed:
- Insatiable demand: Microsoft, one of the world's largest buyers of semiconductors and AI servers, keeps expanding AI infrastructure.
- Multi-model strategy: In-house silicon complements GPU supply chains while Microsoft stays model-agnostic.
- Frontier model price war: Guthrie argues falling prices will drive far more usage.
- AI cybersecurity: He expects security demand to rise sharply as agentic AI spreads.
